Why buy some standard, boring bunk beds when you can build the most beautiful bed chamber in the whole entire kingdom!?
We started building this bunk bed shortly after moving into the apartment in the summer of 2012.
I didn’t use any construction plans in building it. In fact, I didn’t even write anything down. It’s a pretty simple design after all.
I spared no expenses on the materials though. It’s built with 4×4 and 2x6s held together with 1/2″ bolts. It is really sturdy.
As I was walking through the lumber department of Home Depot I saw these stair steps and the idea of stairs instead of a ladder just popped into my mind.
We had no notion of using this as a prop for a movie at the time. In fact, the idea of making it a princess castle bunk bed didn’t even occur to me until I got to about this point in building it.
Sofia and Sasha both helped with the painting, as well as with creative consulting, of course.
The stairs weren’t tall enough, which is why we ended up going with the landing for the stairs. We think it’s really cool.
Obviously I based the size on the dimensions of twin mattresses.
The little blocks at the base of the stairs were used to give it the look of a turret. I drilled holes in each block and in the top rail, then fastened them on with dowels and wood glue.
Good enough to sleep in! But still, it definitely needed more.
Plush purple carpet on the stairs and a silver tower (made of HVAC pipe) with a red cone on top (randomly found at Goodwill) and majestic silver banners. Now this is shaping up to be a beautiful bunk bed!
That light above the lower bunk is in the shape of a crown and says “100% Princess”. Another great Goodwill find.
The front wall is attached by hinges so it can be lifted up to turn the lower bunk into a larger room.
Of course it wouldn’t be a castle without arched doorways.
Painted brick walls, a gold door with crystal handle and a gold tip on the tower are some of the finishing touches that make this Princess Castle simply Fabulous!
What a wonderful project! And memories to last a lifetime. Sasha and Sofia have experienced a Dad’s love that is beyond measure. No amount of gold could buy this precious gift.
This video is a tribute to communication, co-operation, and contribution among members of a family “clan”.
Great job!
A-MAZING!
