Castle Project

The Sky and Air project really began with the princess castle project. When Sofia was about 6 or 7 years old, I was playing building blocks with her and we stacked some blocks up into a pattern that looked a bit like a castle. We liked it, and decided to take the project to the next level. I painted some boxes and cans and we glued them together to make a pretty cool little castle. But that was just the beginning. A few years later when I needed bunkbeds for the girls, I decided to build a bunk bed from scratch — and why not make it a princess castle bunk bed?

Then in 2014, when Sasha was five, she asked if I could build her a princess castle like the one I built for Sofia. How could I say no?! This time I decide to make an even fancier castle than the first one, but I had no idea what a major project that would be.

We had already began to play around with the Sky and Air movie idea, having shot the dumpster diving scene in the summer of 2012, but that’s about as far as we got. As the castle began to come together the idea occurred to us that we could use that castle as the backdrop for the Sky and Air movie. That’s when we got serious about the project. And the rest is history!
